ISHS Acta Horticulturae 354: I International Workshop on Carrot

STUDY OF THE DEVELOPMENT AND THE GERMINATION OF CARROT SEEDS (DAUCUS CAROTA L.)

Author:   A. Bonnet
Abstract:
The large variability observed in the carrot seed results in a heterogeneity that is detrimental to the crop. The size of the embryo is one of the best criteria of seed quality ; its development was studied during seed formation after two very different types of pollination.

The embryo develops after the endosperm and reaches the hear stage 17 to 20 days after pollination ; then it continues its development with very variable kinetics ; it is able to be grown in in vitro culture.

The immature seeds are fit to germinate very early but the conditions of dessication have an influence on the percentage and the kinetics of germination. A high hygrometric condition coming before harvest involves a loss of germination energy particularly after insufficient pollination.
