INFLUENCE DE LA PROFONDEUR DE SEMIS, DE L'ETAT DE SURFACE DU SOL ET DE LA TAILLE DES SEMENCES SUR LA LEVEE DES PLANTULES DE CAROTTE

Abstract:
In practice, the establishment phase for a carrot crop presents a number of difficulties. The rate of emergence declines sharply when climatic conditions result in soil surface crustingbefore complete emergence.

To study the effect of various crop-growing factors on the emergence of carrot seedlings, an experimental program was conducted in a greenhouse on sandy silts taken from a well-known carrot farming area (Barfleur, northern France).

Seeds were sowed at depths of 1, 3 and 5cm. Various soil surface conditions were produced, either by preventing the development of a surface obstacle, or by creating surface crusts of known thickness and moisture content using a rain simulator. Two diffenrent seed weight categories (1.60mm – 1.80mm) of the NANDOR variety (Clause) were compared.

Emergence is delayed,spread over a longer period and reduced in number as the depth of sowing increases, and in the case of mechanical obstruction at the surface. The rate of emergence ranges from 94% in the absence of surface crusts with a sowing depth of 1cm, to 34% for a sow depth of 3cm when there is a dry crust of 5mm thickness.

Under favorable conditions (sowing at shallow depth, no crusting or only thin crusting), there is no difference in the emergence characteristics of the two seed weight categories. Conversely, deep sowing and the presence of thicker crusts have a detrimental effect on seedlings grown from smaller-sized seeds.
