ISHS Acta Horticulturae 354: I International Workshop on Carrot

MISE AU POINT DE LAVEURS DOUX POUR CAROTTES DE SABLE

Author:   J. Bohec
Abstract:
Cleaning of carrots using conventional, non-immersed rotary washing systems casues damage to the lower part of the vegetable. In hot weather, the carrots blacken and go limp as they are moved through their distribution channels.

Through the combined efforts of a number of manufacturers, more gentle washing systems implementing two different operating principles have been developed and tested:

  • washing in a horizontal plane
  • immersed rotary washing

These new washing systems have allowed a significant reduction in damage to carrots, resulting in better storage resistance of the vegetables. The units are used effectivelyon carrots grown in sandy soils. Washing must take place as soon as possible after harvesting. After washing with new units, carrots are somewhat less shiny than with conventional washing systems, but their long-term resistance is much improved.
