RECHERCHE DE FACTEURS CONTROLANT L'ETAT SANITAIRE DE LA CAROTTE EN COURS DE CONSERVATION

Authors:   B. Cam, C. Raynal-Lacroix, F. Villeneuve, F. Rouxel
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to improve the sanitary quality of cold-stored carrots. The paper discusses the limitations on the application of fungicides (benomyl, iprodione) to harvested carrots stored under optimum conditions (1°C - 98% Relative Humidity), as highlighted by the results of laboratory testing. An analysis of the mycoflora present on diseased carrots after 50 days in storage confirmed the preponderance of Mycocentrospora acerina. The study next focused on the sensitivity to this pathogenic fungus of carrots receiving various nitrogen treatments in soilless culture: when provided with food supply characterized by a decreasing availability of nitrogen, at given stages of crop development, carrots exhibit a lower occurrence of necrosis. These initial data must be confirmed on carrots grown in the field. Nonetheless, there is already good hope for improved control of parasite problems caused by M. Acerina in stored carrots. In addition to storage conditions, growing techniques also seem to require closer consideration, in particular as regards nitrate fertilizers. Finally, knowledge pertaining to the host-parasite relation between D. carota and M. acerina must be reviewed.
