EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURE, OXYGEN AND OSMOTIC PRESSURE ON GERMINATION OF CARROT SEEDS : EVALUATION OF SEED QUALITY |

| Abstract:
Carrot (Daucus carota L.) seeds are not dormant. They germinate in a wide range of temperatures (5–35°C), and the thermal optimum is ca 25–30°C. Low temperatures (5–10°C) slow down germination and reveal seed heterogeneity and differences among cultivars and batches. Carrot seeds are also very sensitive to oxygen deprivation and osmotic pressure. The results obtained allow a better understanding of poor field emergence under unfavourable sowing conditions (too low or too high temperatures, or soils with excess of water), and lead to a recommendation of carrying germination tests in non-optimal conditions for better evaluation of seed quality. | |
