THE INFLUENCE OF POLLINATION METHODS ON YIELDING OF NEW BLACK CURRANT CULTIVARS

Authors:   E. Zurawicz, S. Pluta, D. Chlebowska
Abstract:
In the field experiment, conducted in 1991–1992 the influence of four pollination methods on fruit yield of seven black currant cultivars (Fertödi-1, Triton, Ben Nevis, Ben Lomond, Titania and Titania Zam.) was investigated. These methods consisted of: 1. Open pollination, 2. Hand-self-pollination executed with pollen from the same or neighbouring flowers, put by hand with paint brush (in isolators). 3. Natural self-pollination (in isolators). 4. Open pollination + twice air blow at the time of full flowering.

The best results were obtained with the fourth method. Fairly good crop was also harvested from hand-self-pollinated plants (combination 2). The two remaining methods gave the poorest results.
