ISHS Acta Horticulturae 352: VI International Symposium on Rubus and Ribes

IMPROVEMENT OF PRODUCTIVITY VALUES OF BLACK CURRANT WITH CROSS BREEDING

Author:   A. Porpáczy
Abstract:
Black currant has been included in the breeding programs of the Institute of Horticulture, Research Station Fertód since 1965. Hungary is situated in the southermost part of the black currant's adapted zone. Most of introduced cultivars infrequently performs satisfactorily and the breeding program of our country has stressed the use of indigenous Ribes species and geographical taxons considering genetic diversity.

We intend to breed black currant hybrids of higher fruit quality, with low sensitivity to diseases, better adaptation to our climate and greater ability to produce higher yield with high probability. One of these promising selection F 6001, is designated as "Fertód 1" and released for Hungarian cultivation since 1976.
