CHROMOSOME LOSS FOLLOWING INTERSPECIFIC HYBRIDIZATION IN RUBUS CHAMAEMORUS L.

Abstract:
Interspecific hybridization is useful in the production of haploids in a number of species. Pollination with foreign pollen may lead to parthenogenesis in the female parent or ploidy reduction may occur following the elimination of chromosomes in the developing zygote. The production of polyhaploid (2n=4x=28) Rubus chamaemorus L. was attempted by crossing female cloudberry selections with several other Rubus species. Seed from these crosses were aseptically removed from the endocarp and germinated in vitro. Induction of chromosome elimination was attempted by treating leaves from a selection of 30 hybrids with the mitotic inhibitor parafluorophenylalanine in an organogenesis medium containing the synthetic cytokinin thidiazuron. Initial counts on several seedlings with a maternal phenotype indicate these plants are mixoploid.
