ISHS Acta Horticulturae 352: VI International Symposium on Rubus and Ribes

RUBUS AND RIBES GERMPLASM AT THE CANADIAN CLONAL GENEBANK

Author:   M. Luffman
Abstract:
Rubus and Ribes germplasm is preserved at the Canadian Clonal Genebank located in Trenton, Ontario, Canada. The Rubus collection includes 38 named cultivars originating in Canada, the United States and Europe and 110 accessions of North American and European indigenous species. The named material was obtained from nuclear sources and is stored under screen. Species germplasm is grown in field plantings where evaluations for desirable horticultural and genetically distinct traits are done; a backup collection of species material is stored in protected culture. The Ribes collection includes 85 named cultivars of black currant, red currant and gooseberry originating in Canada, the United States and Europe and 15 accessions of Canadian and European indigenous species. All Ribes accessions are grown in a field planting, with backup potted plants in protected culture.

Passport and characterization (descriptor) data for both Rubus and Ribes is maintained in a database format on an IBM compatible personal computer. A Genebank inventory is published annually and is available upon request.

Germplasm is distributed for research and breeding purposes.
