ISHS Acta Horticulturae 352: VI International Symposium on Rubus and Ribes

REVIEW OF RUBUS SPECIES USED IN RASPBERRY BREEDING AT EAST MALLING

Author:   V. H. Knight
Abstract:
The introduction of related Rubus species has been fundamental to the raspberry breeding programme at East Malling since the 1950s. This was done to broaden the genetic base of the crop and to transfer useful characters which are absent or poorly expressed in R. idaeus. Progress in transferring characteristics from R. occidentalis, R. cockburnianus, R. crataegifolius, R. arcticus, R. odoratus, R. spectabilis and R. lasiostylus is reviewed and the subsequent intercrossing of backcross derivatives of several species described. The species status of the current breeding material, lines exchanged with other breeding programmes since 1980 and the Malling cultivars released since 1975 are summarised.
