ISHS Acta Horticulturae 352: VI International Symposium on Rubus and Ribes

BREEDING RUBUS CULTIVARS FOR QUALITY AND DIVERSITY

Authors:   H.K. Hall, L.R. Brewer
Abstract:
Breeding Rubus cultivars for adaptation to New Zealand conditions has been underway since 1972 in raspberries and 1980 in hybridberries. Considerable improvements have been made in raspberries and in hybridberries, giving new cultivars with improved texture, shelf life, growth habit and pest and disease resistance. These new cultivars have colour and flavour similar to the cultivated types. Further selections have been taken with colour and flavour different to the standard cultivars which have potential for development as new fruit types. In particular raspberries have been selected with a "hazelnut" flavour, and hybridberries with diverse flavours, from very mild fresh market types to very acid strong flavoured types suitable for processing.
