BLACKBERRY CULTIVARS RESPONSE IN THE NORTH OF SPAIN |

| Abstract:
Northern Spain farms are mainly involved in animal production. E.C. market Guidelines and the minifundistic structure pushed us forward to look for new alternative crops in order to be capable of keeping rural population at their sites and favouring the incorporation of young people to this activity in a durable way. Blackberries (Rubus sp) are very interesting in low budget farms due to their high productivity and short pay-back period. An experimental study with four cultivars: "Ashton Cross", "Black Satin" "Smoothstem" and "Thornfree" was conducted at I.E.P.A. (ASTURIAS) in the same pedo-climatic and cultural conditions in which its culture will be accomplished. All the cultivars obtained a very high yield (>17 Tons/ha), being "Smothstem" with 29 Tons/ha out of 5 crops the very best. Harvest periods last over a 6 to 9 weeks period from mid July until September. Control of pest and diseases was not necessary except for Blackberry rust (Phragmidium rubi-idaei). | |
