ISHS Acta Horticulturae 352: VI International Symposium on Rubus and Ribes

BREEDING AND VARIATION IN RUBUS GERMPLASM FOR LOW WINTER CHILL REQUIREMENT

Authors:   Carlos D. Fear, M.-Dee L. Meyer
Abstract:
Delayed and poor budbreak are commonly observed in Rubus germplasm after mild winters in the coastal region of central California. Significant variation exists among cultivars for bud development where suboptimal winter chilling occurs. Observations on budbreak for progenies of raspberry and blackberry crosses revealed many transgressive segregants. The amount of budbreak was consistent for cultivars from year to year.

Development of lower chilling types should be rapid through a recurrent selection program where both parents exhibit intermediate to high budbreak.
