METHODS AND TIMING OF BLACK CURRANT PRUNING |

| Abstract:
The pruning time and pruning methods of black currant cv. 04jebyn were studied in a machine harvested field in 1982–1990. There were no significant effects on the yield or berry size when the mean of seven cropping seasons was considered, but the use of a pruning device mounted on the side of a tractor for removing bending branches decreased significantly the need of pruning by hand tools. When the device was used and injured and old branches were pruned by hand tools at the end of the blossoming period, the yield decreased in two years. The need of manual pruning was least when the mechanical pruner was used every autumn, and old and injured branches were pruned every third autumn by hand tools. There were no differences in yield and amount of manually removed branches whether the pruning was done totally by hand tools in early spring or in late autumn. | |
