THE BIOLOGY OF BLOOMING, NECTAR AND POLLEN EFFICIENCY OF 4 ORNAMENTAL RIBES SPECIES

Abstract: During 1990–1992, the period and abundance of blooming as well as nectar and pollen efficiency of 4 ornamental Ribes species (R. alpinum L., R. aureum Pursh, R. glandulosum Grauer, R. sanguineum Pursh) were studied in the Lublin area. Flowering of bushes started in the end of March and finished in the end of May. The mean length of the blooming period ranged from 24 to 31 days. The lives of 1 flower were similar - 7 days, except R. alpinum - 13 days. The racemes were few or many flowered. The mean number of inflorescences on plant reached 44611 for R. alpinum . The flowers are protogynous, with astructural nectaries, covering receptacle. Nectar secretion started in a bud stage while the another dehiscence took place during, or just after petals opening. Sugar efficiency of 10 flowers in mg (throughout their lives) ranged from 0.14 (R. alpinum ) to 17.77 (R. aureum). Pollen efficiency of 1 flower (mg) ranged from 0.0716 (R. alpinum ) to 0.3616 (R. aureum). Insects visited examined species mainly for nectar.
