PRESENT SITUATION AND FUTURE PERSPECTIVES OF HAZELNUT CULTURE IN INDIA

Abstract:
The hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) has various synonyms such as Filbert, Cobnut, Barcelona nut, European hazel, etc. It is known as 'Findak' or 'Bindak' in Hindi, 'Bhotia Badam' in Kumaon hills, 'Sharoli' in Shimla hills and Pangi area of Lahaul Sapiti (Srivatsva, 1974). There are two main groups of this nut found in India. The first being filbert which are long and somewhat similar in shape to normal human finger nail and second Cobnuts which are roundish and flattened. Filberts are the improved selection of the Cobnuts.
