PERSPECTIVE VARIETIES OF HAZELNUT (CORYLUS PONTICA). SCIENTIFIC FOUNDATION OF ORCHARD PLANTING AND TREATMENT |

| Abstract:
Ladies and Gentlemen, my colleagues, I'd like to mention that Georgia, as one of the native land of hazelnut culture, has its big traditions. At present there are 167 original and imported hazelnut varieties. These varieties are under scientific observation since 1957 in the west and east Georgia in the hazelnut collection gardens. We have 167 hazelnut varieties in our collections, from Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, Turkey, England, Austria, Germany, Azerbaijan and other countries. Out of them 57 varieties are original, 8 varieties are zoned in Georgia. The following 5 original varieties are for testing: 'Dedoplis titi', 'Gulshishvela', 'Anakliuri', 'Shveliskura', 'Khachapura', 'Tskheniz dzuzu'. If you like any of these varieties we'll be glad to provide them. Dedoplis titi (Figure 1). It is spread mainly in west Georgia, the variety is of medium growth strength, it is characterized by low shooting. The fruit is big and has cylindrical form. The yield is 4.5–5 kg per bush. The fat content is 68–70%, the percent kernel is 52–53%. Gulshishvela (Figure 2). The variety is spread in west Georgia. It is well adapted to the humid subtropical area of the west Georgia. It is characterized by vigorous growth, high yield (5–6 kg per bush). The percent kernel is 50–52%, the fat content is 63–65%. Shvelis kura (Figure 3). It is mostly spread in Guria and Samegrelo: the variety is of vigorous growth, the plant crown has a pyramid shape, is high yielding (6–6.5 kg per bush), the percent kernel is 50–52%, the fat content is higher than 63%. Anakliuri (Figure 4). It has been obtained by means of mass selection. It is at the first place among the widely spread varieties in Georgia. The variety has vigorous growth, the fruit is round, the percent kernel is 50–52%, the fat content is 67–68%, the medium yield is 6–6.5 kg per bush. Tskhenis dzuzu (Figure 5). It is spread mostly in west Georgia. It is high yielding especially in humid subtropical areas. It is characterized by vigorous growth, the medium yield per bush is more than 6 kg. At present the planting of industrial orchards is carried on in newly dried soils of Kolkhida lowland. The plantings of Hazelnut orchards are carried on in a form of single stemmed trees on plain areas and hills with 5–7° sloping. Because the plant spacing and the feeding area of plants mostly depend on the growth vigour, we classified them according to growth vigour.
