INFLUENCE OF SOME PRECONDITIONING TREATMENTS AND PROPAGATION ENVIRONMENTS ON THE ROOTING OF HAZELNUT LEAFY STEM CUTTINGS.

Abstract:
Localised blanching of cutting bases by the prior application of black tape to the stock-plants during early growing season followed with basal girdling with wire constriction two weeks later markedly improved the rooting of hazelnut leafy shoot cuttings from 41.0 to 82.0 per cent. This treatment combination was found superior to blanching or girdling alone irrespective of the propagation environment, however under high humidity ventilated fog environment this treatment combination resulted upto 90 per cent success. This treatment also increased the number of main roots and their root length considerably. Basal necrosis of cutting bases was least under combined treatment, whereas shoot growth was better under girdling.

In general the high humidity ventilated fog environment increased the rooting percentage of hazelnut leafy cuttings. The rooting was 10.0 to 15.0 per cent more than that in the polythene enclosed mist. Extension growth of cuttings under high humidity ventilated fog was more, however the basal necrotic areas was also higher in this environment.
