WATER USE OF HAZELNUT TREES AS MEASURED WITH LYSIMETERS |

| Abstract:
The water use of two hazelnut cultivars, Ennis and Fertile de Coutard, was measured from 1982 to 1989 with lysimeters making water balances every ten days. The water consumption was not significantly different between the two cultivars. The evapotranspiration (ET) from April to September increased two-fold in 8 years and, during the same period, the transpiration was increased 6.5 fold and its ratio to ET from 17 to 61 % in relation to the tree development. The monthly crop coefficients, as calculated with the transpiration and ETP (Penman) rose from 0.4–0.5 in spring to 0.65–0.8 in summer for 9-year-old hazelnut trees at 670 trees/ha. If no rain occurred, the drip irrigation requirement was 35 1/tree/day from June to September reaching up to 50 1. in July or August. | |
