EFFECTS OF WATER STRESS ON DEVELOPMENT GROWTH AND YIELD OF HAZELNUT TREES

Authors:   M. Mingeau, T. Ameglio, B. Pons, P. Rousseau
Abstract:
Hazelnut trees cv. Fertile de Coutard planted at spring 1985 in 180 1. containers were subjected, from 1989 to 1991, to different water supplies applied from several days before fertilization to harvest. The more progressive the drought, the better the transpiration recovered after drought. Although the growth of the trunk and the shoots was severely (more than 80 %) reduced during water stress, it could in some cases recover or even exeed the control rate at resumption of optimal irrigation. A very sensitive period for yield occurred from fertilization to kernel filling with more than 60 % yield reduction on average, the most sensitive phase being fertilization. Water stresses applied at the end of kermel filling and during the ripening only affected the harvest time ; a stress beginning 2 to 3 weeks before the harvest resulted in an early fruit fall. The moderate drought applied in the 1991 experiment was more comparable to orchard condition. It reduced the nut yield by about 20 % ; growth of trees was especially affected in July.
