MYCORRHIZAL ASSOCIATION BETWEEN CORYLUS HETEROPHYLLA AND TUBER MELANOSPORUM

Author:   J. Craddock
Abstract:
Mycorrhizal symbiosis has been demonstrated for pot grown seedlings of the East Asian hazelnut species Corylus heterophylla Fisch. and the Perigord black truffle Tuber melanosporum Vitt. Mycorrhizal synthesis was accomplished using freshly collected truffle sporocarps for spore inoculations of germinated hazelnut seeds under semi-sterile conditions in the greenhouse. The mycorrhizae showed the typical form, color, surface texture and associated hyphae of Tuber melanosporum mycorrhizae described for other Corylus spp. An attempt was made to isolate in vitro cultures of T. macrosporum Vitt. and T. melanosporum for use as mycelial inoculum. Difficulty of isolation and slow growth of the in vitro cultures led to their abandonment in favor of a direct inoculation method using macerated sporocarps.
