DICHOGAMY AND FLOWERING PERIODS OF ELEVEN HAZELNUT VARIETIES IN NORTHERN PORTUGAL - EIGHT YEARS OF OBSERVATIONS

Authors:   A. Santos, A. Silva
Abstract:
This study is to get knowledge about hazelnut flowering periods for eleven varieties at Vila Real (Northern Portugal) and to evaluate their dichogamy type. During seven flowering periods (1985–91) catkin and cluster development were monitored weekly.

Under Vila Real climatic conditions, Grossal and M. Bollwiller varieties, taken as protandric by GERMAIN et LÉGLISE in SW France, have shown as protoginic as well as Morell. Ennis proved as homogamous and Gunslebert, F. Coutard, Daviana, Butler, L. Espanha, R. Piemonte and Segorbe are protandric; those varieties had their female flowering time closer to the male one.

As expended by BARBEAU (1973) these results strongly suggest a close relationship between the dichogamy genetic characteristics and the environment.
