SELECTION OF TONDA ROMANA AND TONDA DI GIFFONI CROSS POLLINATED HAZELNUT SEEDLINGS

Authors:   A. Tombesi, P. Preziosi, M. Boco
Abstract:
In 1983, 4000 seedlings of Tonda Romana and Tonda di Giffoni, derived from cross pollination were planted at a 3.5xlm in spacing. On the seedlings selected after an initial screening carried out in the 8th year, 8 selections were evaluated for agronomic and technological traits.

Their main characteristics, (with pellicle removal, scoring from 0 to 10) are:

  • F4-32: growth habit, moderate upright; kernel percent, 42.60%; round index, 0.932; pellicle removal, 10.
  • F6-P200: growth habit, upright; kernel percent, 48.89%; round index, 0.995; pellicle removal, 9.
  • F25-P29: growth habit, upright; kernel percent, 67.20%; round index, 0.995; pellicle removal, 6.
  • F13-P9: growth habit, upright; kernel percent, 57.84%; round index, 0.840; pellicle removal, 10.
  • F21-P12: growth habit, upright; kernel percent, 54.08%; round index, 1.003; pellicle removal, 9.
  • F19-P29: growth habit, upright; kernel percent, 51.55%; round index, 0.894; pellicle removal, 9.
  • F15-P5: growth habit, very upright; kernel percent, 48%; round index, 0.826; pellicle removal, 10.
  • F25-P33: growth habit, spreading; kernel percent, 44.21%; round index, 0.820; pellicle removal, 10.

Trials are in progress to assess orchard performance and to cross the best seedlings.
