EARLY TREE PERFORMANCE OF FOUR HAZELNUT CULTIVARS AND ADVANCED SELECTIONS IN OREGON |

| Abstract:
Trees of 'Barcelona', 'Ennis', 'Casina', and 'Willamette' grafted onto 'Daviana' rootstock were planted in 1983. The first yield data were obtained in 1985 and 'Ennis' and 'Willamette' out-yielded 'Barcelona' and 'Casina'. Over 7 years, the greatest cumulative nut yields per tree have been from 'Ennis' (25.7 kg), followed by 'Casina' (21.5 kg), 'Willamette' (18.6 kg), and 'Barcelona' (15.3 kg). Percent kernel, percent nut size, percent blanks, and percent moldy kernels were part of the cultivar evaluations. The percent kernel was usually lowest for 'Barcelona' (~43%), intermediate for 'Ennis' and 'Willamette' (~47%), and highest for 'Casina' (>50%). 'Ennis' consistently had the lowest percentage of blanks and moldy kernels. 'Barcelona' averaged about 9% defects and was the highest of the four cultivars. 'Casina' has had a biennial bearing tendency. In the low yield years, split sutures may be a problem for 'Casina'. Nut sizes were usually in the giant/jumbo category for 'Ennis', large for 'Barcelona', large and medium for 'Willamette', and small for 'Casina'. In 1990, a second trial including 9 cultivars and 8 advanced selections was planted. Pistillate flower density measurements, used to quantify precocity in the spring of 1992, identified OSU 160.060, OSU 244.001, 'Tonda di Giffoni', and 'Ennis' as more precocious than 'Barcelona', 'Tonda Romana', and 'Tonda Gentile delle Langhe'. The bearing habit of these genotypes is being characterized. | |
