Abstract:
Of the nut crops, hazelnut is second in importance only to almond.
Yet, world production is based entirely on selections from the wild and public breeding programs have only recently been initiated.
In the last three decades, a substantial body of information on diversity in the genus Corylus and genetic control of important traits has been accumulated and efficient breeding methods developed.
This paper provides a summary of this information and outlines opportunities for future improvements.
