CAREERS IN HORTICULTURE VIDEO -- THE PROCESS |

| Abstract:
A 12–15 minute VHS format video is in production for, and funded by, the American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS). Our objective is to present the breadth of opportunities in horticulture in an exciting and balanced way to students ages 12–18, with major emphasis on age 15. Our goal is to increase their knowledge of and interest in horticulture, resulting in increased enrollments in horticultural education and ultimately in more skilled employees. Over the past year approximately 18 hours of footage have been taped using Betacam SP format in 15 states in 4 regions of the United States. This includes tapings at 78 locations and 77 interviews. Footage required about 10 days to review and notate, with several subsequent sequential eliminations resulting in final testimony (20 segments ranging from 6 to 39 seconds each) and cover shots (140) for the first draft of this version using a narrator and students to provide continuity. Other versions using other approaches are likely. Sites were chosen, and often arranged, at the suggestions of ASHS members, and those from related associations and industries. Suggestions on all aspects of ultimate style and content were also solicited from various educators, the ASHS Educational Media Committee and the ASHS Board and Resource Council--all of whom either received periodic progress updates, reviewed footage samples, or reviewed a rough cut of the video. These persons in turn solicited the input from various colleagues, video and education specialists and students. Not counting the time of these reviewers, and those assisting at various stages, the producers and videographer have invested approximately 58 weeks in this project to date. | |
