ISHS Acta Horticulturae 350: I International Symposium on Education and Training in Horticulture

USING DECISION CASES TO IMPROVE HORTICULTURE EDUCATION

Author:   Emily E. Hoover
Keywords:   teaching, case method
Abstract:
Decision cases allow students to be placed in management situations and solve managerial problems without having to experience the situation first hand. Decision cases have been used in business education in the USA, but have come into use only recently in agricultural disciplines. Important aspects of the paper include defining what a decision case is, what purposes in education they fulfill, and how the case method is used in teaching courses at the University of Minnesota. A specific case focusing on whether an orchardist should apply Alar (daminozide) to apple trees is outlined as an example.
