Abstract:
A team of horticulturists and extensionists at the Sokoine University of Agriculture have been working together to link education in horticulture to the Tanzanian Small producers conditions.
Students have been involved into the activities of a research development programme (The Franco-Tanzanian horticultural Programme - FTHDP), through lectures, field practicals and special project or dissertations.
The FTHDP, based at SUA, conducted with the participation of students, an in-depth research on farming systems in Mgeta in the Uluguru Mountains.
The study enabled the understanding of farmers circumstances and identification of research and development actions to support farmers in improving the productivity of their labour in horticultural production.
Farmers participation in the activities and achievements are elaborated.
The approach is considered to provide viable outreach facilities and the development of appropriate teaching materials, permit farmers discover the university with its potential for technical assistance and enables students and lecturers to operate outside their spheres.
