QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCE IN AMENITY HORTICULTURE IN THE UK

Author:   H. Course
Keywords:   National Vocational Qualifications, Scottish Vocational Qualifications, Training and Enterprise Councils, Local Enterprise Companies, Education, Training
Abstract:
The background to the introduction of a system of recognising competence of performance within UK industries by means of National Vocational Qualifications and Scottish Vocational Qualifications (NVQs/SVQs) in the United Kingdom (UK) is outlined. Arguments are presented to support the inevitability of recognition and adoption of NVQs/SVQs by the amenity horticulture education and training establishments in the UK.

The potential of NVQs/SVQs for promoting the enhancement, expansion and development of education and training in amenity horticulture in the UK is described. Particular niches for NVQs/SVQs are presented in relation to human resource management: education and training, recruitment and selection, appraisal within the amenity horticulture industry. The opportunities provided by the new system to educationalists and trainers, professional bodies, employers, and individual horticulturists are outlined.

Experience has been gained in many industries of the successful introduction of NVQs/SVQs within both college-based and work-based environments. Case studies are referred to, to demonstrate implementation in practice. Resources (practical and financial) available to facilitate implementation are explained.
