SOME ASPECTS ON WATER AND FERTILIZING RELATIONSHIPS IN PEAT CULTURE OF TOMATO

Abstract:
In a glasshouse experiment with tomato (var 'Minerva W. W.') grown in peat, different watering regimes (1. 1 and 2. 2 times the evaporation from a free water surface) and N:K ratios (1 : 1, 5 and 1 : 0. 5) on two depths of peat (10 and 20 cm) were studied. The yield and the number of fruits increased significantly with the depth of the peat layer. The increase was highest on peat with low potassium supply. The higher watering regime caused a small but not significant increase of the yield. The weight of the fruits was not affected by the factors studied.

Samples for leaf analyses were taken out at three different times during the growing season. The leaf content of total N, NO3-N, P and K did not differ significantly with the depth of the peat. The higher watering regime had no effects on the amount of P and K but caused a small increase of total N and NO3-N. The leaf content of Ca was higher on the 10 cm layer of peat and did not differ with watering regimes.
