INCREASING BUD-LOAD IN KIWIFRUIT ORCHARDS

Authors:   G. Costa, R. Biasi, R. Testolin, F. Succi
Abstract:
High bud-load/ha in kiwifruit has been attained by leaving a higher bud-load/vine or by reducing in-row spacing. The effects of increasing bud-load/vine or plant density by adopting standard or modified training systems were investigated to evaluate whether yield could be enhanced without compromising quality. The results indicate that in the standard T-bar system the increase of bud-number does not lead to a proportional yield increase and does reduce fruit quality. In the standard T-bar the increase of vine number/ha only gave a yield increase in the first productive years. Cropping and vegetative parameters showed that at the same bud load/ha a downward-cane-oriented T-bar performed best. This system may enable bud-load to increase by averting or reducing the negative effect of shading.
