THE EFFECT OF HANDTHINNING ON RETURN BLOOM OF 'SUMMERED' AND 'AROMA' APPLES

Authors:   M. Meland, B. Gjerde
Abstract:
Preliminary results from a fruit thinning experiment by hand on 'Summered' and 'Aroma' apple varieties are reported. Four thinning times and seven degrees were tested in order to achieve high annual yields and fruit quality. Both fruit size and amount of return bloom decreased as time of thinning was delayed during the season. Thinning 'Summerred' at pink bud to doubles per 2 clusters gave the greatest yield of fruits larger than 60 mm in diameter in average for two years. No yield differences were found when thinning 'Aroma' at pink buds or 10 mm fruit diameter.
