FRAGARIA VESCA L. ‘ALPINE’ PROTOPLAST CULTURE AND REGENERATION

Authors:   R. Infante, P. Rosati
Abstract:
The wood somaclonal (Fragaria vesca L.) is the widest spread, almost around the world, spontaneous diploid (2n=2x=14) Fragaria species (Darrow, 1966). Some clones possess interesting agronomics traits seldom exploited in breeding programs of the cultivated somaclonal Fragaria × ananassa Duch. (2n=8x=56) due the different ploidy level. The protoplast technique could provide an interesting tool for obtention of "synthetic" octoploids through somatic hybridization with other Fragaria species. Nevertheless it is fundamental to obtain plant regeneration from protoplast from this species. In this work the first results of protoplasts isolation, culture and regeneration from a clone of F. vesca ‘Alpine’ from Watsonville, California are reported.
