MOLECULAR INVESTIGATION OF THE CHLOROPLAST GENOME IN FRAGARIA SPP.

Authors:   R. E. Harrison, J.J. Luby, G. Furnier
Abstract:
Thirty genotypes representing nine Fragaria species were investigated to establish putative relationships between the taxa using restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) representing 25% of the chloroplast genome. Thirteen phylogenetically useful mutations were observed among the taxa. Most groupings were similar to those of classical taxonomic methods. Potentilla fruticosa was more closely related to Fragaria than Duchesnea indica. F. iinumae appeared ancestral to all other Fragaria taxa studied, sharing a mutation with the outgroup, Potentilla. F. nilgerrensis was diverged from the rest of the taxa studied. All octoploid taxa clustered together based on three cpDNA mutations. These results must be considered preliminary as phylogenetic interpretations will be refined by further examination of the chloroplast genome with more restriction enzymes and probes.
