Cultivars Fern and Douglas, two salt sensitive strawberries, were crossed with a salt tolerant beach strawberry, Fragaria chiloensis. Samples of the two crosses were initially tested for salt tolerance in vitro in the germination and seedling stages.
Most recently, hydroponic testing has been done on the two crosses and three parental types as mature plants rooted from runners to correlate findings with the in vitro work.
Significant salt tolerance has been noted in the Fern × F. chiloensis plants.
Seedlings grown in vitro appear more salt tolerant than mature plants grown in hydroponics since a salt level of 0.2% NaCl increased in vitro growth above that of control, but decreased growth in hydroponics.
Differences in relative growth were also noted when lines were subjected directly to high salt levels at a much lower concentration than an application in which the salt level was gradually increased.
A level of 0.5% NaCl applied directly to hydroponic solution resulted in marked differences in growth rate between genotypes tested, whereas 1.3% was tolerated when salt build up was gradual.
