TEMPORAL DISTRIBUTION OF FLAVONOL GLYCOSIDES IN STRAWBERRY LEAVES

Authors:   John L. Maas, Robert J. Griesbach, Gene J. Galletta
Keywords:   Fragaria × ananassa, flavonoids
Abstract:
Leaves from strawberry plants of the varieties Guardian, Allstar, Kent, Lateglow, Earliglow, Lester, Honeoye, and Redchief were harvested at approximately monthly intervals from September, 1990 to March, 1991 from a replicated planting at Beltsville. Flavonol glycosides were extracted and separated by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Individual flavonoids were not identified, but characterized by peak retention time and quantified as peak area percent. A total of 29 flavonol glycosides, represented by 15 major and 14 minor peaks, were separated. Although some variation was found among cultivars and over time, flavonoid content appeared to be relatively stable. No significant changes were observed among the 15 major flavonoid peaks with variety or time. Several minor flavonoids did vary by their presence or absence with variety or time, but their significance has not been determined.
