ISHS Acta Horticulturae 348: II International Strawberry Symposium

BREEDING FOR MATTED ROW AND HIGH DENSITY PLANTING SYSTEMS IN NEW JERSEY.

Authors:   J. Fiola, G. Jelenkovic, P. Nitzsche, G. Galletta
Abstract:
The major objective of the New Jersey-USDA (NJUS) strawberry breeding program is the development of high quality cultivars for the conventional matted-row and high density raised bed production systems. Selection priority for matted-row includes earliness with excellent fruit flavor and size. Selection for the phenotype best suited for annual system includes low runnering, strong vigor, large fruit size, and good flavor. Selections for the matted-row system, including NJUS8607-2, NJUS8608-1, NJUS8611-1, and NJUS8614-2, have equaled or exceeded ‘Earliglow’ in earliness, fruit weight, production, and/or flavor, and are ready for Step IV trial and release. The selections for the annual system have shown great promise but require further testing in New Jersey and other areas where this system is utilized.
