EARLY ESTIMATION OF STRAWBERRY FLORAL INTENSITY AND ITS IMPROVEMENT UNDER COLD GREENHOUSE

Authors:   A. Jemmali, P. Boxus
Abstract:
Floral intensity was estimated from dormant ‘Gorella’ plants. The number of microscopic flowers on the main truss was correlated with those emerging in the spring. The number of flowers developing later on the secondary trusses was associated with the developmental state of the axillary shoots during induction phase and before dormancy. Runner diameter and forcing were studied to establish relationships between vigor and flowering behaviors. Number of flowers increased with runner size. Floral induction could be managed by environmental temperatures. Our experiment, conducted under natural conditions and in a cold greenhouse, demonstration that more flowers per plant developed when dormancy is delayed by slightly higher ambient temperatures.
