ISHS Acta Horticulturae 348: II International Strawberry Symposium

EFFECT OF FLOWER THINNING ON STRAWBERRY FRUIT WEIGHT AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO ACHENE NUMBER

Authors:   S. Khanizadeh, M. Lareau, D. Buszard
Abstract:
Removal of the primary or secondary flower buds of strawberry (Fragaria X ananassa Duch.) increased the average fruit weight per plant in all cultivars tested. However, removal of both primary and secondary flower buds did not increase the average fruit weight per plant. ‘Sparkle’ produced the lowest fruit weight per plant. ‘Midway’ had the greatest number of sound achenes per fruit but similar fruit weight compared to ‘Chambly’, ‘Glooscap’, ‘Honeoye’ and ‘Kent’. There was a quadratic relationship between the number of achenes and fruit weight among cultivars.
