ISHS Acta Horticulturae 348: II International Strawberry Symposium

EFFECTS OF PHOTOPERIOD AND CHILLING ON FLORAL FORMATION OF INTERMEDIATE TYPES BETWEEN JUNE- AND EVERBEARING STRAWBERRIES

Authors:   T. Yanagi, Y. Oda
Abstract:
Two experiments were conducted to elucidate the effect of photoperiod and chilling on the floral formation of intermediate types between Junebearing and everbearing (day-neutral) strawberry cultivars. In the first experiment, non-chilled plants of an everbearer (‘Rabunda’) and two intermediate types (‘Aiko’ and ‘Kletter-Erdbeere Hummi’) initiated flower buds under a 16 hr daylength (16-LD) and a 8 hr daylength (8-SD), whereas two Junebearers (‘Fukuba’ and ‘Hokowase’) initiated flower buds under the 8-SD but not under the 16-LD. In the second experiment, there was no significant effect of chilling on inflorescence production of two everbearers (‘Ostara’ and ‘Rabunda’), but the number of inflorescences produced by one Junebearer (‘Hokowase’) and one intermediate type (‘Kletter’) decreased with the duration of chilling.
