DEVELOPMENT OF FRAGARIA GERMPLASM IN CANADA

Authors:   A. Dale, Hugh A. Daubeny, M. Luffman, J. Alan Sullivan
Abstract:
The genetic diversity of Canadian strawberry breeding programs is being increased in three ways: by the development of synthetic Fragaria octoploids, and by selection of clones from two large collections, one of F. chiloensis from British Columbia and one of F. virginiana from Ontario. Out-crosses from synthetic octoploids ‘Guelph S01’ and ‘Guelph S02’ have already produced selections of variety potential. The F. chiloensis and F. virginiana populations are extremely variable and selections are presently being made for incorporation into breeding programs. Two strategies, back-crossing and ‘reconstitution’ of F. x ananassa from F. virginiana and F. chiloensis are being used to incorporate the germplasm into the breeding programs.
