LATE PLANTING OF STRAWBERRY USING BARE ROOT OR PLUG PLANTS

Authors:   Michel J. Lareau, M. Lamarre
Abstract:
Many Canadian growers would like to adopt the hill strawberry planting system with black plastic mulch but their choice of planting dates for optimal plant development is limited. Indeed, spring planting as commonly used with the matted-row system encourages excessive vigor of the traditional short-day cultivars planted under the hill system. Although mechanical derunnering can be achieved, it nevertheless requires some hand labor and extra costs. On the other hand, late summer or early fall planting, as reported in other areas with milder autumns (Poling and Durner, 1986) does not allow enough time for adequate plant development before the set of winter.

The objective of this experiment was to find an alternative planting period for locally adapted short-day cultivars planted on black plastic mulch using different plant types and winter protection.
