ISHS Acta Horticulturae 348: II International Strawberry Symposium

EFFECT OF MULCH TYPE IN ANNUAL HILL STRAWBERRY PLASTICULTURE SYSTEMS

Authors:   David G. Himelrick, W.A. Dozier Jr, J.R. Akridge
Abstract:
Annual planting of strawberries using raised beds, trickle irrigation, and plastic mulches has been practiced for a number of years in production areas such as California (Voth, 1972) and Florida (Hochmuth, 1988). More recently the system has been expanded to other production areas such as North Carolina (Poling, 1992) and Alabama (Himelrick, et al., 1992). Black or clear plastic mulch is commonly used in these systems. Both vegetative and reproductive strawberry plant responses can be modified by the type of organic or synthetic mulch used in the production system (Fear and Nonnecke, 1989; Himelrick, 1982).
