PROSPECTS FOR NEW FRESH MARKET STRAWBERRY CULTIVARS FOR THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST |

| Abstract:
‘Totem’, which is primarily grown for processing remains the most widely planted strawberry cultivar in the Pacific Northwest. There is need for improved fresh market cultivars, with at least as much virus tolerance and winter hardiness as ‘Totem’ but with a lighter more glossy red external color. Two recent releases from the Agriculture Canada breeding program at British Columbia's Vancouver Research Station have some of the requirements necessary for fresh market acceptance. ‘Sumas’ is early ripening and produces fruit with the fine flavor traditionally associated with Pacific Northwest strawberries. Soft texture and susceptibility to postharvest rot limit the shelf life of the fruit. ‘Shuswap’ produces firm, attractive-appearing fruit, which ripens mid-season and has a good shelf life. Unfortunately it lacks the distinctive flavour associated with strawberries produced in the region. Recent selections appear to combine some of the better traits of the afore-mentioned cultivars. | |
