PHOSPHOGLUCOISOMERASE ISOZYMES, ALLELIC COMPOSITION AND INHERITANCE IN CULTIVATED STRAWBERRY

Authors:   M. Kong, T. Sjulin
Abstract:
A high resolution electrophoresis buffer system, Buffer system D, for studying PGI isozymes of cultivated strawberries was developed at Driscoll Strawberry Associates, Inc. The use of Buffer System D revealed the segregation patterns of PGI isozymes in self-pollinated F2 seedlings and enabled our detection of five functional alleles and one null allele in four loci. The data indicated that all five of the PGI alleles were codominant to each other. Isozyme patterns from one of the F2 seedling populations provided simultaneous evidence suggesting that the eight sets of chromosomes behaved as a diploid and all five functional alleles were segregated according to Mendelian ratios in self-pollinated F2 seedlings. Analysis of PGI isozyme segregation patterns in F2 seedlings also differentiated four allelic arrangements of the PGI alleles and therefore greatly improved our ability to identify strawberry cultivars.
