ISHS Acta Horticulturae 347: II International Symposium on Integrated Fruit Production

GUIDELINES FOR INTEGRATED PRODUCTION OF POME FRUITS IN EUROPE

Authors:   E. Dickler, S. Schäfermeyer
Abstract:
The idea of Integrated Fruit Production (IFP), as a technique designed to be harmless to the orchard ecosystems, can be traced back to the early 1950s. The development of this pioneer work was hindered, however, in most of Europe and not accepted by the professional associations or by practising fruit growers for two decades. Thereafter, the implementation of IFP was very slow between the mid 1970s and the late 1980s.

The situation changed dramatically in 1988 when the AGRIOS IP programme from the South Tyrol region of Italy was published. In the following year 14 IFP guidelines for pome fruit production were drawn up in 9 European countries. At the first International ISHS Symposium for Integrated Fruit Production, held in Wädenswil, Switzerland in 1989, the IOBC/WPRS working group "Integrated Plant Production in Orchards" was commissioned to co-ordinate and harmonise the surge of developments of regional and national guidelines.

As a result of the tremendous work undertaken at 4 workshops, held in 1990 and 1991 at Ladenburg (Germany), Lana (Italy), Dossenheim (Germany) and Wye (U.K.), a joint IOBC-ISHS group published the first "General Principals, Guidelines and Standards for Integrated Production of Pome Fruits in Europe" in an IOBC/WPRS Bulletin, 1991/XIV/3.

This paper discusses the most important elements of the European IFP Guidelines and gives the results of a survey of the latest development in IFP activities across Europe.
