ISHS Acta Horticulturae 347: II International Symposium on Integrated Fruit Production

THE STATE OF IFP IN YUGOSLAVIA

Author:   D. Gvozdenovic
Abstract:
Climatic conditions determine that fruit production in Yugoslavia is located in two main regions. In the littoral type climate of Montenegro principal fruit crops are olives, figs, citrus fruits (mostly mandarins, and some orange, and lemon), Punica granatum, Diosypros kaki and Ceratonia siliqua. In the continental type climate of Serbia the main fruit crops are plums, apples, sour and sweet cherries, pears, peaches, apricots, walnuts, filberts, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, currants and quinces.

Amongst the growers of the principal fruit crops 25% are producing fruits using IFP or other similar methods on 50% of the acreage. IFP methods are mostly used for apple, pear and peach, whilst BFP (Biological Fruit Production) methods are used for plum, apricot, sour and sweet cherry, raspberry, walnut, quince and other fruits.

The guidelines for IFP in Yugoslavia are the same as the IOBC guidelines. Only a small part of the IFP-fruit is sold separately, with a special IFP label.

IFP production is organised by both fruit growers organisations and science organisations and its implementation is controlled by the latter. The appropriate scientific institute gives advice on IFP to the growers during the season.

Last year the Faculty of Agriculture at Novi Sad began several experiments concerning the introduction of biological methods of plant protection and also concerning the resistance by domestic and foreign apple varieties to Venturia inaequalis and Podosphera leucotricha.

There are several other organisations which are also working on IFP and this year attempts will be made to coordinate all of them in to one system.

The attitude of the growers to IFP is positive, especially amongst those interested in fruit export.
