Abstract:
A national label for IFP does not yet exist in Spain.
However, the Regional Government of Catalonia (NE of Spain) created the label "Products obtained by Integrated Production" in June 1991. No other label has yet been created by any other Regional Government or private firm.
IFP guidelines for specific crops are currently being developed in Catalonia.
Tomato and apple are the first crops to be dealt with, mainly because successful programs of Integrated Pest Management for these two crops have already been developed.
These guidelines are intended to match the international IOBC guidelines.
An association of cooperatives in Valencia (E of Spain) has an agreement with an Italian firm, under which their associated growers produce fruits under the guidelines of the Italian IFP label.
Fifty thousand kilograms of oranges and lemons were exported under this agreement in 1992. Checking procedures are carried out by the staff of the cooperatives and the analyses of residues in fruits, by public laboratories.
As a first step, Integrated Pest Management is promoted by both the National and Regional Governments.
Growers are organised in "Crop Protection Associations", that are subsidised in the initial years, mainly with a year-to-year decreasing percentage of the salary of the technical staff.
These Associations are under the supervision of the Regional Plant Protection Services, and will be the main way of implementing IFP techniques in the future.
Research in IFP is conducted mainly at Universities and public research centres and is focused on pome fruits, citrus and protected crops.
