Abstract:
An IPM programme was instituted for apples and pears in South Africa in 1986. In 1991, 120 sample orchards in Elgin, the main apple producing region, were included in the scheme. Monitoring schemes and treatment thresholds have been developed for the major pest complex; codling moth, Cydia pomonella; banded fruit weevil, Phlyctinus callosus; European red mite, Panonychus ulmi; woolly aphid, Eriosoma lanigerum; apple scab, Venturia inaequalis. This experience with IPM forms the crop protection component of an IFP scheme currently being promoted in South Africa.
