Abstract:
Panonychus ulmi and Aculus schlechtendali can both be controlled in UK apple orchards by exploiting the action of the predatory mite Typhlodromus pyri. Organophosphate-resistant strains of T. pyri are widespread in apple growing regions, and can be artificially introduced where necessary.
An OP-resistant strain of T. pyri has been subjected to synthetic pyrethroid selection pressure leading to a four-fold increase in resistance.
The choice of pesticides for use in IPM/IFP programmes is discussed.
